Now, comes the fun part. The choice of furniture easily available in the Philippines is not that great and is relatively more expensive to buy. If you go for the bamboo furniture, it may come with a few issues. We discuss that later in the video below.
Remember the average Filipino is not as heavy or as tall as the average westerner and that makes the furniture here more on the smaller side. Squeezing in and out of an uncomfortable chair and sofa is going to be tiresome and is going to make living in your new home disappointing too. Small beds and mattresses and very flat mattresses are the order of the day, so it will be vital to invest in bigger beds and mattresses.
Mirrors have to be placed much higher on the walls for the foreigners and try to see if you can lift that toilet bowl higher off the ground. These little things become annoying, so it is worth thinking about before you go and buy.
Tables need to be tall enough for those knees and dining chairs need to be taller than most supplied in the Philippines as you soon find it very uncomfortable when you have your knees hurting. All these small things are vital to make that new home somewhere you can relax and be happy.
When buying appliances at most smaller retail stores, I have found that you can negotiate at least 10% off for cash or Philippine check. I usually put half down and the rest on delivery or some stores insist on payment in full, so be sure to look the units over carefully before they bring them in the door, if at all possible, or definitely before they leave and you sign for it.
Also the one thing that upset me was that with the refrigerators they said you cannot plug them in for at least two hours after the delivery to allow things to settle down, I do not know if that is true or not with the ones in the Philippines since I had never bought a ref in the Philippines before the one for our condo and we had not bought one in a long time in the US either, so I figured I would listen to them and wait and luckily for me it worked fine once plugged in. All other appliances we were able to test upon delivery or even before we left the store with the small ones we took with us.
